The Western Lawman :: Television Media TV Essays
The Western Lawman Gunsmoke was a dramatized radio program that portrayed life in the old west. According to online sources, "Plots dealt with the lives and activities of Marshall Dillon, Doc, Miss Kitty, Chester, and the other residents of Dodge City, Kansas in the late 19th century." Lawman Marshall Dillon was the center of everything that happened. The peace and welfare of Dodge City rested in his hands. Marshall Dillon represents the quintessential western lawman, with his independence, authoritativeness, and general distrust of strangers. Dillon stood alone. No one could dictate to him how to act or what to do. This is illustrated in several instances. In the episode "The Army Trial" the army officer assigned to bring in Jed Cook, the deserting soldier asks for Dillon's cooperation after Cook escapes. Dillon agrees to cooperate but on his terms. He demands that the officer remove his troops from town and allow him to conduct the search personally. In the second episode, "General Parsley Smith", Dillon insists on handling all investigation himself. He takes tips from Parsley, but instructs him to stay out of the situation while he checks things out. In "Uncle Oliver", he makes it plain that there is no job opening for a Marshall's assistant. Oliver suggests that Biney learn how to be a Marshall by shadowing Dillon, but Dillon won't have it. He states that he does not need any help from anyone except Chester. Chester is the only person he consistently allows to help him. Otherwise, he is a one man outfit. Marshall Matt Dillon is also characterized by his authoritativeness. He will not be challenged and he will not back down. When General Parsley stirs up trouble in town, Dillon warns that he will run Parsley out of town if he does not stop slandering the new banker. When Parsley is caught once again repeating the same offense, true to his word, Dillon orders him to leave town. While being arrested for desertion, Cook cannot fire on Dillon because of the respect he commands. And Uncle Oliver is compelled to search for Biney even though he is plotting to kill Chester. As you listen to these episodes, you realize that Dillon is also very suspicious of strangers. He is constantly questioning whether or not they are legitimate. In the first episode ("The Army Trial") as he and Chester approach the wagon in distress, they are ready to help but their help is repeatedly refused which arouses suspicion.

In the following I will show you why and how some of these things came about. It was 1941, on a calm, tranquil day in December, until a impulsive, unexpected Japanese air attack on Hawaii brought the united states in to the war. The US pacific fleet which was docked at pearl harbor at the time, unfortunately they were unprepared. That Sunday early around 7:56 am, approximately two weeks after Washingtonââ¬â¢s warning on the attack. ââ¬Å"Which was a warning received by Washington from the is navy base at pearl harbor.â⬠(#1) Within two hour of the attack, eighteen ships had been sunk or heavily damaged. One hundred and sixty four aircrafts had been destroyed and another one hundred and twenty four damaged, also more than two thousand, four hundred service men had been killed and almost one thousand two hundred wounded. The Japanese crippled the united states fleet in only a loss of twenty nine planes. The Japanese moved in a quick swift pace as they quickly destroyed all of Pearl Harbor. For the US luckily before the attack on Pearl Harbor most of our aircraft carriers and some destroyers left the harbor. This belief has been shared by many influential leaders in the past, including Henry Thoreau, Mahatma Ghandi, and Martin Luther King. They all believed in a non-violent approach to solving their social grievances. In most cases their approach was successful and was noticed by society and brought about a change in the laws. This nonviolent perspective stems straight from Jesus, who says, ââ¬Å"Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.â⬠(p192). Others believe that by being disobedient you are under minding the laws and thus creating chaos within society. But, if unjust laws are not brought into light or under minded, then there will be no change in those laws. All Quiet on the Western Front: Corruption of Power theme Essay
Power. The word itself instigates a conundrum of fear and attraction. The attraction for it, the attraction for more, and the attraction for seeking the absolute highest boundary of it. Those who thirst for it see visions of wealth, vast expansions territory, and above all, the ability to do whatever one wants whenever he wants. And those who thirst for it will seek it through whatever means necessary, whether it be a fistfight or a war. Necessity is the basic derivation for all hostility and aggression; therefore, power, and its corruption, is the source of all war. Such corruption is exemplified in the World War I novel, All Quiet On the Western Front, by Erich Remarque, through the eyes of the platoon leader, of the military officials, and of the highest level of power in Germany at the time, the Kaiser. The bottommost level of power represented in All Quiet On the Western Front is the platoon leader, who is given a pack of soldiers to bully around under his abusive authority. The authority figure in the novel is Corporal Himmelstoss, who is to train the newly enlisted soldiers in the ways of war. He is described as a semblance of Louis Napoleon in the novel; ââ¬Å"a small undersized fellow with a foxy, waxed moustacheâ⬠(Remarque 23). Immediately the description of Himmelstoss triggers an image of a short, power-hungry figure, the figure that suffers from what many refer to as ââ¬Å"small-manââ¬â¢s syndrome.â⬠His image is further emphasized in the statement: ââ¬Å"He had a special dislike of Kropp, Tjaden, Westhus, and me, because he sensed a quiet defianceâ⬠(Remarque 23). Himmelstossââ¬â¢s dislike for these soldiers is not directly related to the fact that he supposedly ââ¬Å"sensed defianceâ⬠, but more so to his will to push the soldiers around. He focuses his efforts on Tjaden, the ââ¬Å"skinny locksmithâ⬠¦[who] is and always will be as thin as a rakeâ⬠(Remarque 2-3). To make up for his lack of size and strength, Himmelstoss attacks the thinnest, soldier of the pack, who he assumes to be the weakest. However, when Himmelstoss loses his position of authority, he is not so brave. In the Front, during invasion, Paul Baà ¼mer finds Himmelstoss in the dug-out ââ¬Å"pretending to be wounded. His face looks sullen. He is in a panicâ⬠¦He does not stir, his lips quiver, his moustache twitchesâ⬠(Remarque 131). Himmelstoss is not a powerful man on his own, but under the spell of a powerful position, he is corrupted, and abuses it toà disguise his own weaknesses, allowing him to gain some form of power. The next level in the military edifice of power lies in the competitive military officials. With the increased level of power comes an increased level of corruptionââ¬âand an increased level of consequence. Himmelstoss may have instigated hostility, even hatred, from his platoon, but the corruption of a higher military official may result in deaths. In a desperate effort to continue the attack on France, mass drafts occur, and the officials immediately send the untrained recruits to the front line. Paul Baà ¼mer states that the recruits ââ¬Å"are helpless in this grim fighting area, they fall like flies. Modern trench-warfare demands knowledge and experienceâ⬠(Remarque 129). The officials, in order to look good by fighting the war long and persistently, rush these recruits into battle, where they fall like flies. The officials carry out this inhumanity again and again, but it is not only for the sake of ââ¬Å"looking good,â⬠but for the desire of getting promoted, f or the desire of gaining more power. The head of power in Germany, and therefore the one able to command all those below, is the Kaiser, Wilhelm II. His position is so incredibly grand and authoritative, that he is seen almost as a form of deity. When Paul Baà ¼mer sees the Kaiser in person, he is ââ¬Å"really rather disappointed; judging from his pictures I imagined him to be bigger and more powerfully built, and above all to have a thundering voiceâ⬠(Remarque 202). This false impression of his emphasizes the disguise of power. Under his disguise, the Kaiser is viewed as giant, mighty warrior enthroned with gold and silver. In reality, he is a man unlike any other man in power, greedy and vicious. A man so powerful, Tjaden believes ââ¬Å"he has everything he can want alreadyâ⬠(Remarque 205). If he has everything he can want, why does he persist in the war? There is no limit to his demand for power, and so he pushes his officials further into battle, as they push their soldiers further into bloodshed. The war Wilhelm II creates is not only devastating physically, but instigates what is known as the ââ¬Å"lost generation.â⬠Paul Baà ¼mer describes his experience, being ââ¬Å"lostâ⬠because of the war. He ââ¬Å"will never be able to be [indifferent and hopeless] again. [He] was a soldier, and now [he] is nothing but an agony for [himself]â⬠(Remarque 185). His flourishing life wasà thrown away in the war and gave way to an indifferent automata, and after his leave, he is emotionally in between war and life, in ââ¬Å"No Manââ¬â¢s Land.â⬠An entire generation of soldiers, of human beings, of lives, is destroyed through emotion and severe disturbance. And for what? For Kaiser Wilhelm II to seek that highest boundary of power. Power is a recurrent theme in All Quiet On the Western Front, in three different levels: the mindless soldier, the aspiring military official, and the boundless Kaiser. Each one desperately seeks power in an effort to make themselves appear stronger. The quest for this is usually a corrupted one, and corruption creates consequence. The more power one acquires, the more devastating the consequence. When, if at all, will the quest for power end? The corruption is inevitable.

Freudââ¬â¢s Model of the Human Mind Essay
Nowadays, it is no doubt that human beings are suffering from depression and pressure in daily lives. However, most of the people are not aware of it. Psychologists have been focusing on how these repressed, and subconscious emotions play an active role throughout life since the early twentieth century. The ââ¬ËFather of Psychologyââ¬â¢, Sigmund Freud, theorized a system of categorizing individualââ¬â¢s mental life into three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is the primitive part of a personality that respond directly to the human instinct; the ego is the decision-making component, and it develops to satisfy between the lust of the id and the external world; the superego is the preconscious part of the personality that deals with moral judgment. Many authors have incorporated this theory into their works by means of the characters. The novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, tells a story about the end of the innocence and the beginning of the savagery t hat a group of British children left stranded on a beautiful island after a plane crash, and they were immersed in freedom until the human nature took over. Golding utilizes Jack, Ralph, and Piggy who are the primary characters to interpret Freudââ¬â¢s concepts of this three types of human personality, respectively. First of all, Jack is the best concerned with the personality suggested by id. He represents the dark side of human nature, and he displays the id mentality through his violent actions. He had tried to maintain civilized before he started hunting. However, it does not remain constant. It fades soon while he is driven by his desires. The dictator becomes dominant in his personality. Following his desires, every time the first thing that comes to his mind is always to kill or hurt others. While Jack and his boys are managing to kill a wild boar, they begin dancing and saying, ââ¬Å"[k]ill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her inâ⬠(Golding 79). This chart indicates the unit desires among them and it also becomes a symbol of their savagery. It is obviously not a primary need but only meant for fun and pleasure. They are now driven by the innate desire for destruction. Furthermore, according to the ââ¬Ëpleasure principleââ¬â¢, it seeks to avoid pain and unpleasantness in order to satisfy oneââ¬â¢s biological and psychological needs. It is not bad enough to have desires but to act upon it. Jack does so to a mother sow, ââ¬Å"Jack [is] on top of the sow, stabbing downward with his knifeâ⬠¦the spear move[s] forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing [becomes] a high-pitched scream. Then Jack [finds] the throat and the hot blood spout[s] over his handsâ⬠(Golding 149). The imagery and action indicate that Jack does things without thought of any consequences, only for his own impulsive desires. Like the id aims to take over the thought in oneââ¬â¢s mind without determining the needs of others rather than reality and morality. Secondly, Golding portrays Ralph as an embodiment of ego that makes sure to satisfy all the needs and wants of the id in a way that seems proper in todayââ¬â¢s world, which means that ego not only interacts with conscious but also the unconscious mind. Ralph is the chief and one of the most influential boys in this little society. He constantly acts as a democratic leader that balancing between the id and superego. For instance, realizing Jackââ¬â¢s desire of being the chief, Ralph gives him control of the hunting team, ââ¬Å"Ralph look[s] at him, eager to offer something. ââ¬ËThe choir belongs to you, of course.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦The suffusion drained away from Jackââ¬â¢s faceâ⬠(Golding 19). He cares about othersââ¬â¢ feelings and does something realistic that is allowed by the society. At the same time, he fulfills Jackââ¬â¢s desire to be a leader to a certain extent. This reasonable action, which is controlled by the ego, also satisfies the urges of id in a so cially accepted way. Moreover, Ralph has a strong sense of responsibility. While he is complaining to Piggy that the other boys do not care about the importance of the fire going, he makes a confession, ââ¬Å" ââ¬Ë[s]upposing I got to like the othersââ¬ânot caring. What ââ¬â¢up become of usââ¬â¢ â⬠(Golding 153). He is more conscious of the society rather than himself. Ralph is a neutral leader as he identifies the savagery of it and the morality of superego in order to come up with a realistic situation for the public. Like the ego represents the rational aspect of the mind, and maintains peace and stability. To end with, Piggy personifies the concept of superego to carry out the instinctual moral good most of the times. Golding represents Piggy as being more logically and intellectually mature than the others. Acting as the voice of reason, the superego inside his personality moralizes him as a sympathetic and sensible boy and guides him to choose what is morally right. While Jack leads the boys to make noise and rush, ââ¬Å"Ralph [is] left, holding the conch, with no one but Piggyâ⬠(Golding 37). As the mob is full of noise and movement, Piggy does not follow Jack in overexcitement, rather he keeps calm and stays with the chief. His superego dominates him to maintain civilization. He displays consistent attention to societal rulings and feels like structure is the most important thing to the boys. Whatsmore, Piggy is willing to contribute to the society. He is ââ¬Å"so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch woodâ⬠(Golding 142). The moral goodness and devoted nature of Piggy come from his instinct human nature. Like the superego meets the ethical standards by which the ego operates. In conclusion,

Abnormal Psychology Assignment
The textbook also explains four mechanisms that help people deal with adversity and foster a good mental health and defines good mental health as the presence of cognitive, social and emotional functioning. Early Childhood From the individual level, the textbook gives several examples of risk factors. Was lucky enough to not have any behavioral, socio-emotional, cognitive or biological risk factors that were present in the earlier years Of my life that I am aware of. However, my younger brother was diagnosed with a learning disability.Although it didn't affect me directly, some of my friends teased my brother and in turn, affected the way thought about myself in relation to my family. In the family domain, I was raised in a dual-parent household. The textbook states that a single parent household is a risk factor. My parents rarely fought and they have a loving relationship to this day. I would like to say that this is a protective factor. Having the support of both of my parents rea lly fostered my self-esteem and my sense of well-being. This became very evident in middle school when I struggled with my friendships.My parents were always there to support me. When I was very young, my parents were unemployed for a few years. As a protective factor to offset the employment and no income, my parents were able to monitor me and I excelled in my academics for most of my childhood. My parents immigrated to Canada one year before I was born. They were fearful of what would happen when China was given back control of Hong Kong in 1 997, which is where my parents are from. Therefore, they came to Canada to avoid the politics and start a new life for themselves.Coming to a democratic country was a big change for them as well as any children they were going to have. I have grown up without the same pressures and rules that may have been imposed if my parents had stayed in Hong Kong. My self-esteem may have been hindered drastically and may have been more afraid to speak o ut on certain matters because of the way the government is run. The fact that politics is no longer a worry in my early childhood significantly reduced the amount of stress I would've felt had been living my parents' home city.The textbook mentions democracy as an example of a protective factor in the socio- political level. The school system in Hong Kong is also much more stressing on a child even from an early age. Everyone is very competitive in Hong Kong and I'm not sure that would have enjoyed growing up in that type of environment as the pressures to succeed would have been a lot to handle. Was able to develop in a relatively low-stress environment until high school. Mid-childhood Throughout elementary school, I had many friends, which created a great environment for me to develop the skills that were necessary to my social functioning.A presence of social, cognitive and emotional functioning are factors that are part of the definition of mental health. As I moved to middle sc hool, maintained a small group of friends who were positive role models or me. Through the later years however, I was unable to connect with my peers. Some of them had different interests and some even went as far to abuse substances. This particular risk factor is delinquent peers. I never partook in these interests because never needed to turn to substance abuse to get through school and I wasn't interested in the same things as everyone else was.I enjoyed learning and the middle school I attended fostered my cognitive functioning. Because I didn't follow the norm, another risk factor was present in my life; peer rejection. Towards the end of middle school, I ad few friends whom I could trust and was quite shy. I was bullied because of my ethnicity and also because of the fact that I came from a less wealthy background than my peers. This in turn affected my self-esteem and is a large factor in a person's mental health. Although my self-esteem around my peers was not great, I was quite confident in my cognitive and academic abilities. As given many opportunities for personal growth such as being put into a special advanced math program. This helped me lessen the impact of risk factors that I encountered in the peer and school domain. Community articulation also played a huge part in why my self-esteem was still positive. Was involved with extra-curricular outside of school, which allowed me to distance myself away from the risk factors I encountered at school. I had another group of friends could depend on for being positive role models and to foster positive peer relationships.My parents continued to monitor me because they understood that I was going through a tough time with friends in middle school. Because of these factors, they asked me if I wanted to attend the high school in my neighborhood. By moving schools, this allowed me to completely start over and virtually eliminate the risk factors that came with attending this middle school. Early adolescen ce During high school, I was able to step out of my comfort zone and develop resilience to many risk factors because I had found new friends who fostered a positive school climate and positive peer relations.My friends in high school actually cared about school and would encourage me to do my best. They also got me involved in many extra-curricular at school. We connected on many different levels and I was able to enjoy life more without having the terrors that had in middle school and improve upon my social connections. The ability to enjoy life and social connections are two positive mental health components that are defined by the Canadian population Health Initiative (pig. 473).Towards the end of high school, my grandmother was diagnosed with mild depression after my grandfather committed suicide. Both of them were struggling with a mental illness. My entire family was unaware of the mental health condition that my grandfather was in after he was diagnosed with cancer. This put huge stress on my mothers mental lath as well as my own as care dearly for both my grandmother and my grandfather. Currently, grandmothers mental illness is another risk factor that is present in my life. My grandmother is incapable of taking care of herself due to her severe arthritis.My mother took on the administrative work to get her moved to a care facility but our entire family puts a lot of time and energy to see her. This has put stress on everyone including myself. She does not show many signs of improvement and still struggles With mild depression. Current When came to university, I moved out of my parents' home and into a accidence. My apartment mates were my peers at the time. They were delinquent peers and I mostly kept to myself at home. I like to keep things quite neat and the state of our apartment was too much for me to handle.My apartment mates would come home late at night, which would often disrupt my sleep due to the high noise level. To offset the amount Of str ess I experienced, I turned to community involvement. Got involved with Foot Patrol, Winter Carnival and the Chinese Student Association. This allowed me to distance myself from the risk factor because I would be spending less time t home. All the extra curricular involvement enhanced my self-esteem and self-efficacy and had the opportunity to develop myself as a person and grow.The friends met through community involvement had great future aspirations and would always encourage me to plan for my future. This is another protective factor. At the time, I was still unsure of what stream of business wanted to focus on. The uncertainty was a major stress factor in my life but I recently decided to pursue marketing. Next 5 Years will have student loans to pay off which is a significant stress. Also face he task to find a place of my own because I will be moving out.I'll have to move to a different neighborhood and make new connections with the people around me as well as the peers that h ope to meet when start working at a full-time job. My parents have started saving for their retirement and that puts enormous stress on my mental health because they will no longer be able to support me. This is a huge change as for most of my life as I was used to being cared for financially. To offset these stress, I will continue to participate as an active member in the community. This will help o strengthen my relationships with my peers and continue to provide me opportunities for growth.Community participation is a very important part of my life and I hope it will continue to be. It develops a person's cognitive, social and emotional functionality, which in turn leads back to a positive mental health. The personal growth that I've seen in myself gives me a positive outlook on my mental health and life in general. In order to offset the stress that will encounter, I will maintain my current friendships and attempt to create new ones. The business organization of the consulting company is that the leadership group will work hands-on with the consultants to ensure internal customer knowledge and external customer satisfaction. The consultant staff will work with the sales staff for a week to understand the tasks that they have. The sales staff will work with the consultants at the business to better understand the customerââ¬â¢s expectation. The Human Resources Department will work all facets of the business to have an understanding, this will allow them to speak to performance issues if they should arise. The potential legal issues that this business might face are if there are inaccuracies with billing. The consultants will also face challenges with following both policies of the consulting company, and adhering to the policies of our clientââ¬â¢s business. Failure to do so on our behalf will result in a breach of contract by our company. The ethical issues that the business will have is to act as if the co nsultant was an employee of the company. The consultant should refrain from the fraternization of employees of our client. Our client needs to know where they can optimize profit and fraternizing with their employees would hinder the consultantââ¬â¢s ability to give a fair assessment if they were looking to cut jobs to save costs. The business culture of the consulting firm will be customer-centric. Every employee with put the customer at the core of everything that we do. The leaders of the company will put the internal customers at their core and employees will put the clients at theirs. The company will build on the foundation of putting people first. The Human Resources Department will be in charge of following-up to ensure that we are executing at the highest level in this area. The company will use anonymous employee surveys and customer surveys to ensure the highest satisfaction to internal and external customers. The motivation that the company will utilize will be a comprehensive benefitsà package to include 401K with a 5% match, health insurance, and performance based bonus program. The co mpany will also have a variety of cross-training to all employees to ensure that the employees are well trained to perform their tasks efficiently. The technology that the company will use will be computers, laptops, cell phones, and tablets. The computers will be used to process all the customersââ¬â¢ invoices and will store the customersââ¬â¢ contacts also. The company will store any excess information on an external hard drive. The laptops will be given to the sales, consulting, and to Human Resources Departments. The cell phones will be given to all employees to stay in contact with company personnel and the customers. The tablets will be given to the consultants to document notes while at the clientââ¬â¢s location. The Human Resources Department will handle the five components of human resources management in the following manner: 1) Recruitment and Selection ââ¬â The applicant selection process is based off their experience and education, with an emphasis on experience. Human Resources will also look into job history and background. Once HR screens the potential employee, they will schedule a second interview with operations leadership with the applicant. 2) Training and Development ââ¬â HR will setup the training schedule for the new employees and will schedule the new employee with a top performer in the department. For the existing employees, HR will also schedule and track all the employees to ensure that they get cross-training in the other departments to understand the business better. 3) Performance Appraisal and Feedback ââ¬â HR will be in charge of tracking performance appraisals and feedback. However, the leaders of each department will be responsible for executing this and forwarding the information to the HR Department. HR will put this information into the employeesââ¬â¢ personnel files. 4) Pay and benefits ââ¬â The pay structure and benefits will be looked at and setup with collaboration of the owner and the HR Department. HR will keep leadership aware of current pay in this field in order to retain employees. HR will ensure that employees receive the benefits package that the company offers when they become eligible for them. 5) Labor relations ââ¬â HR will schedule employee commitment and satisfaction surveys and compile the results for the leadership of the company. Pulse surveys will also be used by HR to follow-up on results from the commitment and satisfaction survey opportunities that the employees highlight. The costs of operationsà on the business would include the following: lease, payroll, insurance, taxes, legal fees, utilities, cell phone, and office supplies. The business would need all of these items to run the operations effectively. The company is relying on their quality service for their clients business to cover all these costs, and to ensure that the business is profitable.
